Benefits of Brownfield Remediation

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines a brownfield as “a real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.”

An increasing number of community groups are looking to brownfield remediation as a way to revitalize and improve economic development in their cities. While some developers believe that brownfield remediation is too expensive, various studies have indicated that it provides public, economic and environmental benefits with long-lasting results.

Specifically, brownfield remediation does the following:

  • Supports smart growth practices by reclaiming underused spaces and promoting new growth in places with existing infrastructure.
  • Improves water quality and makes riverfronts more accessible for pedestrians or for recreational purposes.
  • Creates new employment opportunities for local residents.
  • Supports environmental improvements to adjacent waterways.
  • Promotes investment in surrounding properties.
  • Preserves historic, culture or other social icons that are important to a community’s identity.
